Our Programs - Education Sponsorship
Children's Education Foundation, a non profit in Vietnam working to break the poverty cycle by helping girls from impoverished or marginalized communities complete school or receive further education or training, helping not just the young women, but also succeeding generations and their communities to have the possibility of a better life with more choice.
Most of the work of our charity in Vietnam is our Education Sponsorship Program with its aim of keeping girls in school until they complete their education. Our CEF children are orphaned, from poor families or they have very difficult family circumstances. This means the carer or family often are enable to keep the girls in school. The best way we can help these girls is with a long-term commitment to their education through our charity in Vietnam.
CEF's education sponsorship programs are helping girls to stay in school in Quang Nam Province in central Vietnam. We worked for eight years in Da Nang to help girls from a leper community complete their education and others in the surrounding communities. We worked ten years in Thai Binh Province in the north to help students there as well.
The children CEF accepts into the Sponsorship Program are in need of educational support to be able to complete their education. We are committed to seeing them finish high school and we too ask those who wish to sponsor to have the same commitment.
Sponsorships are US$300/$380/$440 depending on the class of the child.
Quang Nam Education Program
Quang Nam is a large province with the South China Sea to the east, Laos to the west, Da Nang and Hue to the north and the provinces of Quang Ngai and Kontum to the south. Most of this low-lying coastal province is vulnerable to the full force of the typhoons and the flooding and destruction they bring, especially on the poor. To the west the land is hilly and forested making access hard and reducing productivity. Because there is little agricultural land that can be used all year round, farmers struggle to make a reasonable living. Two crops can be grown each year, but may be lost due to the harsh conditions. The incomes of families vary from zero to US$100 per month. Some of the children have lost one or both of their parents and many are being cared for by grandparents or aunts and uncles. The children mainly come from fishing and farming communities.
Da Nang Education Program
Da Nang is a coastal city in central Vietnam. We started by helping families from an isolated leper community. These families have now been moved from their homeland for development purposes and some have been well compensated. CEF continued to help those that were not. CEF's education program developed to help others outside this community. Most of those we helped were from fishing families. This program is complete now.
Thai Binh Education Program
This program lasted ten years and now is complete. The children we helped were from Phuc Le commune and near by, in the northern province of Thai Binh. Some had only one parent, others had a parent with a disability and a few lived with grandparents in cases where both parents have died or couldn't be looked after by their parents.
Most of the villagers were rice farmers and managed to grow sufficient rice and vegetables for themselves, but not enough to sell. Some families had fish farms or reared pigs or rabbits to supplement their incomes. Because it was so difficult for them to earn a living locally to sustain themselves and their families, a few parents were permanently absent working in large cities. It was not uncommon for parents never to return, while others were absent for long periods and sent money home.
