Our Programs - Education Scholarship
CEF's first Scholarship Program is in the mountains of Quang Nam province near the Vietnam-Laos border in Phuoc Son district.
Trafficking takes place in Vietnam mainly in the mountains and along the borders where there is poor literacy, with many parents and grandparents having had little or no education, and school attendance is poor there. Our goal is to keep girls from these communities in high school by providing a scholarship for each of them.
We gradually have developed this program each year to include more support. We have added extra tuition sessions for the ethnic girls from these communities who are in our scholarship program. Our goal is to help them receive that little extra educational support to lift their school grades. If they can increase them enough they will be eligible for a university education and this will truly change their lives. We have also taught them about female health, hygiene, family planning and sexually tranmitted diseases. Human Trafficking has been touched upon over the years but this year we are running sessions for the whole school on this subject.
Each year we give scholarships to 30-35 hard-working high school students from these very poor families who live in this border region. Poverty here is mainly due to the terrain being hard to work, and the isolation of these communities and lack of work opportunities anywhere near by. Most families struggle to make ends meet as they are subsistence farmers and often suffer from poor weather conditions which destroys their crops. For many families this year was a bad one as their farming land up in the mountains was washed away. Most families farm way up in the mountains and they have to trek for 2-4 hours to reach it. They camp there for several days until the work required at the time is complete. It is a hard life.
A scholarship is US$300 a year and scholarship donors will receive annual photos and an update on the program and child. Donations for the 'Extra Tuition Support' is appreciated. This program costs US$1,200 a year to provide extra tuition in three subjects each, English, literature and math.
NEW:
We are developing new Scholarship Programs to help more girls from ethnic communities. These new programs start in August 2022, and until then we are raising funds for the scholarships, as well as extra financial support for the girls for personal expenses, and emergency funds for their families for when needed. Unfortunately in poor communities urgent situations arrive often. Accidents and serious illnesses need urgent help, but they come with costs not covered by their medical insurance. When families are poor they have no savings.
We always include Career Guidance sessions for our high school students, as these are a powerful way to get the students focused on researching a future career that they are enthusiastic about as well as capable of. We hope you will be interested in supporting this program.
In a year we will start to introduce other education programs depending on what they need the most. These are some of the courses we run for scholarships students: Human Trafficking Awareness, Girls to Women which included female health, hygiene, family planning and sexual diseases, and Communication Skills. If needed we provide free extra tuition as well.
The first of our new Scholarship Programs is in Dong Giang, another mountainous district in Quang Nam Province, where most of the ethnic communities are Co Tu. This program is starting August 2022 to help many of the ethnic students from this school who are from poor families, doing well with their studies and have an ambition to complete high school and go onto university.
The second new Scholarship Program is in Hiep Duc District, once more a mountainous district of Quang Nam Province, where several different ethnic communities live, including Xa-Dang and HMong people. This program also is to start in August 2022 to help a small group of the poorest and best students in this school who wish to be well-educated, empowered and be in a position to break the poverty cycle of generations.
A scholarship is US$300 a year and scholarship donors will receive annual photos and an update on the program.
